History and Origins

Cortijo Desgarrahatos was founded by two brothers, José and Francisco Artillo Cano in 1985, in the heart of the Antequera mountains.

Located just 8 kilometers from Antequera, a very inviting city which is perfect to take a walk though. Not only because of its size, reaching nearly 45,000 citizens, but also because of the continuous physical proximity of its places of interest: Convents, Churches, Patios of stately homes; without forgetting the most important dolmens in Europe: Menga, Viera and Romeral, or the imposing Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor.

And it’s at the feet of this amazing historical location on the edge of the Torcal mountain range that the mares of Cortijo Desgarrahatos graze, on a gently ridged plateau populated with holm oaks and gall oaks. The farm has 130 hectares, where the foals live free until they are three years old. Modern breeding, selection and management sanitary techniques are complemented by natural breeding in large spaces, which for centuries has shaped the rusticity, functionality and character of our breed of Andalusian horses (P.R.E.).

Our entire history begins in 1986, with the purchase of a two-year-old filly: FAROLERA XXVI and two one-year-old fillies: REQUERIDA and TRIUNFADORA, daughters of the same horse: MUSQUETERO II. A magnificent gray specimen son of Bordador V, of the ancient blood line of the Bahones Brothers. This horse is the only one, so far, that we have seen cantering on the site, doing Spanish walk and backward passage. He is also the son of the legendary Hacendoso IV, a pure Carthusian horse from the current Yeguada del Hierro del Bocado, and Consentida II, a direct daughter of Cafre, with more than 75% Carthusian blood and from the Military Stud.

On the other hand, the mothers of our fillies were daughters of Barquillero XII, son of Botinero III, pure Carthusian horses. From here comes the origin of our stud, Carthusian blood with a few drops of Hermanos Bahones and Yeguada Militar. And it is without a doubt all these origins are providing us with the spectacular beautiful dressage horsesy that had been achieved thanks to Mosquetero II.

Today our entire line has evolved, just like the PRE, with horses of great sporting functionality and always keeping in mind the good character and nobility that characterizes them. Horses that undoubtedly meet our goal as breeders.
